By Jeannรƒยฉ March 16, 2011

SAVE THE CHILDREN:
Japan is in a state of emergency. An 9.0 magnitude earthquake rocked Japan on March 11, 2011, triggering a deadly tsunami. At the Fukushima nuclear plant, the quake caused massive explosions which threaten surrounding communities. Japanese media report that the death toll is rising. Thousands remain missing in the aftermath of the tragic disasters.

Save the Children has a team in Sendai, one of the worst-affected areas, establishing an operations base to help the most vulnerable children and their families.

AMERICAN RED CROSS:
March 14: The American Red Cross today announced an initial contribution of $10 million to the Japanese Red Cross Society to assist in its ongoing efforts to provide medical care and relief assistance to the people of Japan following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

“We are grateful for the American public’s generosity and compassion following what has been declared one of the most devastating earthquakes in history,” said David Meltzer, senior vice president of international services with the American Red Cross. “The American Red Cross is in a unique position to help channel that support to our partner in Japan that is playing a critical humanitarian role and comforting the survivors.”

DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS:Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has sent medical teams to support the government-led earthquake and tsunami response in Japan. Our teams are running mobile clinics and conducting needs assessments, which will needs assessments, which will determine the full scope of MSF's response.
