How to Help Kids Become Tomorrow’s Leaders

As President’s Day rapidly approaches, this is a wonderful opportunity to teach kids to become leaders in their community. This American holiday opens up the conversation about teamwork, responsibility and being an advocate for others. Parents can play a vital role in helping their children develop these leadership skills. Here are some tips for parents to help their kids become leaders:

 

1.           Identity Leaders (Locally, State & Nationally)

Parents can give their kids a history lesson by asking them who they think are their local, state and national leaders. They also can do various activities such as matching games, cross words, word searches and computer games to help children learn about people in power in and outside of their communities.

 

2.           Encourage a Positive Attitude

It is important to encourage kids to keep a positive attitude in school, on the playground and participating in extracurricular activities. If they can learn how to turn any negative situation into a positive one at an early age, it will help them to live a happier life. Parents can show positivity through appreciating the small things, problem solving skills and enjoying life.

 

3.           Embrace Teamwork

It is vital for parents to educate their children to work with others in and out of school. It shows them how to work collaboratively with their classmates, respect others abilities and opinions and helps with social skills. Kids can work together on home projects, playing sports, board games and school projects. If they embrace teamwork, they can be more productive and successful students.

 

4.           Community Involvement

Parent can help kids get involved in their communities through volunteering at food banks, pantries, churches and local events. These opportunities provide them with organizational, interpersonal and professional skills that can last a lifetime. It also will children build their resumes as well as give them some ideas on various careers after high school.

 

 5.           Provide Opportunities to Lead

If parents get kids involved in volunteering and participating in extra-curricular activities, it may provide opportunities to lead organizations. It can help kids with decision making skills, being friendly and respective to others and learn how to handle difficult situations in life. If parents can incorporate some of these above ideas, it could be help kids become tomorrow’s leaders.
