PENNSYLVANIA SPCA URGES OWNERS TO PROTECT THEIR PETS FROM ILLNESS AND EVEN DEATH, OFFERS LOW-COST CLINICS

(PHILADELPHIA, PA – April 25, 2011)  --  Unless properly vaccinated, dogs and cats are at risk of contracting one of several, possibly fatal, infectious diseases.  Fortunately, most common infectious
diseases in pets can be prevented by routine vaccination.  In fact, vaccines are usually effective in more than 95 percent of pets vaccinated.  Additionally, routinely vaccinating your pet is often cheaper than paying for treating your sick pet later, and reduces virus transmission in the pet population.

To highlight the importance of getting annual immunizations, the Pennsylvania SPCA has designated May as Vaccination Awareness Month, announced Susan Cosby, CEO.  “We can see as many as ten animals a day
entering our shelters or our clinic suffering from vaccine preventable illnesses,” said Cosby.  “There is nothing more heartbreaking than seeing a poor animal suffer and sometimes die from these deadly diseases.  Prevention through vaccination is much a more humane and less expensive alternative than to make your pet healthy once again.”

In recognition of Vaccination Awareness Month, the Pennsylvania SPCA encourages pet owners to visit their veterinarian to make sure their pet is up to date with vaccines.  The Pennsylvania SPCA will hold a series of low-cost vaccination events for the public at its Erie Avenue headquarters and various locations in the community, in addition to its regularly scheduled weekly vaccination clinics. (See schedule below)  For just $25, pet owners can receive the rabies and distemper vaccinations for cats or dogs.  Other services are available for an additional fee.

Pet owners do not need to preregister, walk-ins are welcome.  Pet owners are encouraged to bring record of any previous vaccines.  A variety of vendors will on hand with educational materials and free giveaways for those in attendance.
